How Long Do Handmade Candles Last? What to Expect from a Luxury Candle

It's one of the first questions candle lovers ask and rightfully so. When you're investing in a handcrafted luxury candle, you want to know if it'll earn its place. The honest answer is: it depends. But there's a lot you can do to tip the balance in your favour.

What affects burn time?

Wax type. Soy and coconut wax burn more slowly and at lower temperatures than paraffin, which means longer, cleaner burn sessions. At Lotus & Flame Crafts, we use premium wax blends chosen for both longevity and scent throw.

Vessel size and wick count. A larger vessel holds more wax — more wax means more hours. Candles with multiple wicks burn faster but fill a room with fragrance more quickly. Neither is better; they serve different purposes.

Candle form. Pillar and sculpted candles ; like our Everlasting Rose Garden Candle or Floral Skull Sculpted Candle ; are denser than container candles, and burn time varies based on how and whether you choose to burn them at all.

General burn time benchmarks.

As a guide, expect roughly 7–9 hours of burn time per ounce of wax for a well-made candle burned correctly. A 6 oz candle, properly tended, can offer 40+ hours of fragrance. Our Handcrafted Cactus Garden Candle and the Luxurious Strawberry Sculpted Candle are popular precisely because they offer both striking design and satisfying burn life.

How to extend burn time.

  • Trim your wick to ¼ inch before every burn
  • Burn for 2–4 hours per session — never more
  • Allow the wax to cool completely between burns
  • Keep away from drafts that cause uneven burning
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light

What about decorative and sculpted candles?

Some of our pieces — particularly the Cake Candles and Bouquet Candles — are designed to be displayed as sculpture. In that case, “burn time” becomes irrelevant: they last indefinitely as art objects. Many of our customers never burn them at all, and the candle remains a permanent fixture in their home.

The most important thing to know: a quality handmade candle, properly cared for, will outlast a cheap alternative by hours and leave a far more lasting impression on both the room and the person who gave it.
